Hennessy Research

At Hennessy Research Associates, Innovative Mechanical Concepts’ project brought together six walk-in coolers and two walk-in freezers, creating dedicated temperature-controlled spaces throughout the facility. In a research facility, dependable refrigeration is part of the infrastructure that supports the work happening every day. Working with our scope combined insulated enclosure installation, refrigeration equipment, piping, and startup.

Each walk-in was sized for its designated space, requiring careful attention to room dimensions, access, and equipment placement. Insulated wall and ceiling panels formed the enclosures, with thicker panels specified for the freezers. From compact rooms to larger storage areas, the installation required consistent workmanship across eight separate spaces.

A defining feature of the freezer systems was built-in redundancy. Separate, independent refrigeration systems were paired with automatic switchover and lead-lag controls, allowing the systems to alternate operation and providing backup capability. That added resilience addressed an important consideration for the facility: how refrigeration would continue if one system became unavailable.

Behind the finished enclosures, our refrigeration scope included new insulated piping connecting the condensing units to the evaporator coils, along with temperature controls and associated components. Bringing these elements together required coordination with the broader construction team so the walk-ins and their supporting systems fit within the building’s layout.

The final stage included leak testing, system evacuation, refrigerant charging, and manufacturer-directed startup. The Hennessy Research Associates project demonstrates IMC’s ability to carry a substantial refrigeration installation from enclosure assembly through operational startup, with attention to both the visible construction and the mechanical systems working behind it.
